Single-car or two-car: which door do you have, and what fails on it?
A Morrisville garage has a single-car door, usually 8 or 9 ft wide and 7 ft tall, or a two-car door 16 ft wide, and the width sets the spring size, the cable load and the opener’s work. Springs, lift cables, rollers and openers fail on both sizes. The technician measures the door before pricing the part.
Single-car doors
A single bay, on a townhome or a house, takes a door 8 or 9 ft wide. The door is lighter, but it still hangs on torsion or extension springs sized to its weight, and a broken spring leaves it too heavy to lift safely. An extension-spring door also gets any missing safety cable fitted. The fix is single-car door spring replacement matched to the door’s weight and height.
Two-car doors
A 16 ft door weighs more than a single door of the same model, so it carries larger springs, and its lift cables and bottom brackets take more load. A wide door that runs crooked or drops on one side has a cable or drum fault.
Pairs of single doors
Some two-car garages have 2 single doors instead of one wide door. Each door has its own springs, cables and opener, so one side fails while the other keeps working.
Openers on any width
An opener only moves a door the springs have balanced. Stripped drive gears, failed logic boards and misaligned photo-eyes are fixed with garage door opener repair service, whatever the door’s width.
Rollers, hinges and track
Worn rollers and loose hinges make a door loud and jerky. A bumper that clips the bottom section or a roller that jumps the rail leaves a door off its track, which stays closed until it is re-hung.
| Door | Common size | Counterbalance | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-car | 8 × 7 ft or 9 × 7 ft | Torsion or extension springs sized to a lighter door | A gap in the spring coil, a door that slams shut |
| Two-car | 16 × 7 ft | Torsion springs sized to a heavier door | Frayed cables, one side lower than the other |
| Two single doors | 2 doors, 8 or 9 ft each | Separate springs and openers per door | One door failing while the other runs |
Door stuck, crooked or too heavy to lift? Leave it closed and stop pressing the opener button: a broken spring or cable turns the door into a falling weight. Call (833) 752-1196 any time, day or night.
How does a tight Morrisville townhome garage change the repair?
A tight garage leaves little headroom above the door and little sideroom beside it, so the springs, track and opener are chosen to fit the space. A standard torsion setup needs about 12 in of headroom; below 10 in, the door needs a low-headroom track arrangement instead.
Townhomes, which the Census counts as single-family attached homes, make up 23.4% of Morrisville’s housing units, and detached houses 32.7%. A narrow bay also leaves little room to stand beside the door, which is one more reason spring and cable work stays with a technician.
- Headroom
- About 12 in above the opening for a standard torsion spring on a 12 in radius track, plus about 3 in for an opener (Amarr).
- Low headroom
- Less than 10 in calls for low-headroom hardware (Clopay).
- Sideroom
- 3-3/4 in to 5-1/2 in of wall beside each side of the opening for the track and brackets (Clopay, Amarr).
- Morrisville homes
- Median year built 2007; 45.4% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (ACS 2020–2024 5-year).
Photos of the door and the failed part, sent before the visit, let the technician plan the work around the space. A storage rack, a ceiling shelf or a second refrigerator in the door’s path is the usual reason a tight garage door binds or comes off its rollers. The technician checks the clearance before re-hanging the door, so the fault does not come back.
Near RDU airport: why does a garage door remote lose range?
Radio interference is one known cause: Genie tells owners within 50 miles of a military base or an airport to check whether nearby radio use overlaps their opener’s frequency, and 390 MHz is the most common opener frequency. A weak remote battery, a misplaced antenna and some LED bulbs cause the same symptom.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport sits beside Morrisville along I-40, and Research Triangle Park borders the town. No interference incident at either one is documented; the airport is simply inside Genie’s 50-mile check radius.
Replace the remote battery
A remote that works only close to the door usually has a weak battery. Test a second remote or the wall button to compare.
Check the opener’s light bulbs
Genie names standard LED and CFL bulbs in the opener as a source of interference. Remove the bulbs and test the remote again.
Switch frequency or add Wi-Fi control
A dual-frequency receiver (315 and 390 MHz) or a Wi-Fi controller takes the remote off the crowded frequency. The technician fits the receiver or the Wi-Fi retrofit, programs every remote, keypad and car HomeLink bridge, and erases the old codes on the visit.

Which battery-backup, surge and HOA jobs fit one visit in a newer subdivision?
The same visit fits a battery-backup opener, a surge protector at the opener’s outlet, a Wi-Fi retrofit, and the paperwork for an HOA-approved replacement door painted to the HOA color. A door original to a 2007 home is now about 19 years old, old enough for builder-grade parts to be wearing out.
Battery backup
A battery-backup opener keeps lifting the door when the power is out, so the car is not trapped and the manual release stays a spare.
Surge protection
A surge protector fitted at the outlet takes the spike that would otherwise reach the opener’s logic board. It does not stop every board failure, so the technician tests the board first.
Springs at the builder’s rating
Builder-grade springs are commonly the standard 10,000-cycle size. That is an inference from the standard rating, not a Morrisville figure. High-cycle springs are stocked for a door that is opened many times a day.
North Carolina ranks fifth nationally for community associations (CAI), and in a planned community the recorded declaration sets the door’s style and color. G.S. 47F-3-102 lets an association fine an owner only after notice and a hearing, so the approval paperwork goes in before a new door is ordered.
What decides the price of garage door repair in Morrisville?
Morrisville repair prices depend on the door’s width and weight, the failed part, the clearance around the door, and whether parts are still made for the opener. Nothing is fitted until you approve the price the technician states.
Door width and weight
A 16 ft door takes larger springs and heavier cables than an 8 or 9 ft door.
Failed part
A photo-eye alignment is a smaller job than a pair of springs or a new drive gear.
Clearance
Low headroom calls for different track hardware than a standard garage.
Opener model
Boards for discontinued openers take longer to find; the technician sources the part first, and the price covers it.
Second door
A pair of single doors is priced door by door, and only the door you approve is worked on.
Third-party figures for springs, cables, rollers and openers are collected in our published garage door repair price ranges. The visit carries no trip fee, and a new door gets an on-site measure and price.
